Reflections on learning to trust the wisdom of the body

Bop to Your Own Beat

What’s playing on your playlist these days?

Lately I’ve been thinking less about the music coming through my headphones and more about the rhythm I’m carrying inside, because I’ve noticed something.

It’s surprisingly easy to lose your own beat when someone else’s is louder.

Their urgency, emotions, opinions, and stress.

Before you know it, you’re moving to a rhythm that was never yours.

I’ve spent much of my life doing exactly that. Trying to match the pace of other people. Adjusting myself around louder nervous systems. Believing that if someone else was anxious, I needed to become anxious too. Or if they were rushing, I should probably hurry.

Lately I’ve been practicing something different.

When I notice myself being pulled into someone else’s tempo, I pause. I take a breath. I listen for my own rhythm again. The quieter one underneath. The one that reminds me who I am.

It’s not always easy, especially when you’ve spent years marching to someone else’s drum. Or when you’ve become so accustomed to everyone else’s needs that you can barely recognize your own.

But every time I slow down enough to hear myself, something shifts.

My shoulders soften.

My breath deepens.

The noise loses its grip.

And something unexpected happens: the people around me often begin to settle too.

I’ve come to believe that real leadership isn’t about becoming the loudest voice in the room. It’s about becoming someone who can remain deeply connected to themselves, even when everything around them feels out of tune.

Maybe that’s what our bodies have been trying to teach us all along.

Not to play louder but just to keep listening for our own song.
