Reflections on learning to trust the wisdom of the body

Whispers

The Headache

Several days ago, knowing I had a busy week ahead, I decided to get ahead on my business task list.

Along the way, I was also caring for family members who needed support.

By 7:00 that evening, I realized I had worked for twelve hours, aside from a quick lunch, and noticed a gentle pressure beginning around my eyes.

Part of me recognized exactly what was happening: My body was quietly asking for rest. Yet at that very moment, another task caught my attention. (Does this happen to anyone else?)

In that split second, instead of responding to my body’s gentle invitation to pause, I convinced myself that this one last thing was more urgent.

An hour later, the gentle pressure had become a tight band of tension wrapping around my eyes and extending to the back of my head.

Then I knew.

I’d overdone it.

Sure enough, it led to a restless night and a full day where I could barely look at a screen the next day.

The irony wasn’t lost on me – instead of getting ahead, I’d fallen behind by trying to push through. But something was different this time.

Instead of criticizing myself, I simply noticed what had happened.

I sat with the regret. I sat with the tension. And I sat with myself.

My attention kept returning to that first quiet whisper from my body the evening before—the one that had gently asked for rest.

More often than not, I dread getting a headache. This time, though, I found myself strangely grateful as it gave me an opportunity to be held again… by me.

To offer myself the same gentleness, redemption, and forgiveness that I so easily extend to others.

Today I’m feeling well again, but more importantly, I think I heard the whisper a little sooner.
